this is what DEEP looks like now
It's that special time of year again, the San Francisco pilgrimage. I am so pleased, surprised and honoured to be back here again. I've had a tough year so far, and that makes it all the sweeter to be in this wonderful and inspiring place. So what's the plan? I got three things that I want achieve this year.
I want to get a ton of feedback on DEEP. I am going show the game every day for at least an hour and try and get answers to some of the toughest questions I am facing with the design. I also just want to let people know about it and get some conversations started.
We want to move the Game Design degree towards a portfolio entry. I was pretty terrible at school and as things stand, I would not have been able to get a place on the course. I am no fan of the Leaving Cert and points system and I think portfolios make more sense than anything else. I want to talk to other courses that already have this in place and see how it is working for them.
Most importantly, I want to have fun. My best work, and my best self, grows out of a pool of joy and happiness. I want to fill up my reserves, like a camel at an oasis.
DEEP has been invited to be part of the Leftfield Collection at EGX: Rezzed in London next month. I have been to a few of the EXG shows and Leftfield has always been my favourite part, so it is a huge honour to be included.
If you are going to the show, do come and say hi. Myself and Niki will be demoing the game, gathering feedback and answering any questions people might have.
You can see the full collection here.
Right, I better get back to making the new controllers.
So, first things first, GameCity is amazing! If you like games, play, learning, hanging out with cool peeps and making new friends you should get your good self there next year. I had the pleasure of showing DEEP over the course of 3 days. The original plan was to do 2, but to my surprise and delight, people wanted to see more. Even better, 2 people told me that is is the best VR experience they have ever had.
During the second day I filmed 8 of the players right after they finished up. Have a look at what they had to say.
The last week has been crazy. I don't think I have ever been busier, but it has been really amazing. Let's get into it.
As you can see from the image above, DEEP now has some cool art in the game. I was far too afraid to show actual screen shots before now but from here on out you will be seeing a lot of them. I absolutely LOVE what Niki is doing with the art. When I imported everything and slipped on the googles last week I almost wept. I was there. I was in my weird Tronlike dreams. It felt so good.
Last week DEEP was brought to the amazing conference CineKid and there, me and Niki finially got to meet face to face. It was wonderful to be able to talk about the future of the project, our hopes and dreams and fears, right up close. It was Pauline from CineKid that connected me and Niki back at Playful Arts, so it felt very right. We did a roundtable talk about the project and had some people try it out for themselves.
It went great!
This was the very first time that the game really worked for people other than myself. Everyone that tried it was able to connect with the game straight out of the gate. We recorded the talk and I will try and get it up online ASAP.
Right after CineKid we had a second, more public showing, at Prototype in the Project Arts Centre. This was DEEPs second visit to the venue, and I am happy to report that this one went very well. About 20 different people tried the game and it worked very well for about 75% of them. Many spent far longer in the game world than I would have expected, wanting to explore every nook and cranny of the environment. The feedback was hugely positive and I feel more confident than ever about the project.
GameCity will mark the 3rd event in the 3rd country in the last 3 weeks for DEEP. Woah. You can come say hi and try it out for yourself at the OpenArcade from noon on Sunday and Monday. All going well, we should have the first our our undersea creatures in the game by there :) I just cannot wait to meet the fractal cyber whale!
